This walk follows Military Road through the civic and commercial heart of Mosman. Military Road runs along the ridge that falls away on one side to Sydney Harbour and on the other to Middle Harbour. The road was constructed by convicts in the early nineteenth century to allow the transport of cannons to the forts on Bradleys Head and Georges Heights. The suburb's development took off in the early 1900s when an electric tramway was constructed along Military Road linking the suburb with the harbour crossing at Milsons Point. In the early days shops clustered around tram stops particularly at Spit and Mosman Junctions where the line branched off to The Spit and Mosman Wharf respectively. The pattern of development along Military Road today preserves the tram stop clustering with residential development in between. Although the shops have changed from produce shops, grocers, coal merchants and blacksmiths to high end fashion retailing, gourmet food and quality design, the built form has been preserved.
