Parriwi Park and The Spit

This walk begins with an exploration of one of the best preserved areas of natural bushland. A short walk through the bush is rewarded with spectacular views looking down Middle Harbour to Grotto Point and beyond and from a different vantage point looking over Spit Bridge and up Middle Harbour towards Northbridge. After retracing your steps a short distance you descend to Parriwi Road. This road, with its constant gentle slope, was hand-excavated in the late nineteenth century to allow trams from the city to reach the Spit where a punt took the passengers to another tram waiting on the other side.

The walk then takes you along the East side of the Spit and under Spit Bridge. If you have deep pockets you might like to inspect some of the boats for sale at the two marinas, alternatively you can hire a kayak for $30/hour. The walk continues along a fine path following the water’s edge through Spit West reserve. The path runs on top of a new seawall that has recently been constructed to provide a habitat for a great diversity of marine life.

This area of Mosman, like Clifton Gardens, first achieved notoriety for its dance hall and fairgrounds. At later times it was a garbage dump and then the home of many houseboats, three of which remain to this day. During the depression unemployed men and their homeless families set up shacks on the foreshore. Mosman Council provided food relief.
