Balmoral to Chowder Bay

This walk connects two of Mosman’s iconic waterfront locations – Balmoral Beach and Clifton Gardens. The walk starts and ends at sea level but in between you ascend 90 m via steps then slowly descend along a bush track to what used to be a naval facility that was part of Sydney’s defences. The highest point on the route is Georges Heights, This area is very much connected with the early history of Sydney. Governor Philip encouraged one of the aboriginal elders, Bungaree, to establish a farm in the area, but after a few years the entire tribe succumbed to introduced diseases. For more than a century these commanding heights were used to maintain gun emplacements to defend Sydney from invaders. The armaments used and the invader most feared changed over the years but the presence of defence personnel was continuous. The land was released to the public in 1995 and reborn as part of Sydney Harbour National Park. Sydney Harbour Federation Trust was established in 2001 and manages Headland Park and Chowder Bay. Many of the old defence buildings have been preserved. There are some great views to be enjoyed as well.

If you want to do a longer walk (2 hours), Sydney Harbour Federation Trust has an a leaflet describing a walk from Taronga Zoo to Balmoral which includes Bradley's head. You can download it here.
